• Distribution spans the African continent
• Common and widely distributed (Moreau 1945)
• Also occurs on the southwestern Arabian peninsula
• Northern most populations
• Southern Mauritania east through central Chad and Sudan, into southwestern Saudi Arabia
• Southern most populations
• East-central Namibia east through southern Botswana and extreme northeastern regions of South Africa
• An occasional (vagrant) visitor to countries outside this region
• Iraq, Lesotho, Liberia, and Tunisia
• Non-migratory
• Generally considered as resident, though some adults and immature are nomadic

• Extending into bush savanna
• Grasslands
