Red-necked Wallaby (Macropus rufogriseus) Fact Sheet: Distribution & Habitat

• Southeastern Australia and Tasmania
• Larger coastal islands near Tasmania and in Bass Strait
• Well-established, introduced populations in Tasmania, New Zealand's South Island (Jackson 2005) (Le Page et al. 2000), and Europe (England, Scotland, Ireland, etc.) (Eldridge and Coulson 2015)
  • These New Zealand populations were founded over as much as 3 generations with between 6-10 individuals
  • Today show reduced genetic diversity due to this reduced population size in the past

• Grassy areas in Eucalyptus forests (Johnson 1987) (Jarman & Calaby 2008)
  • Feed on grass, but require forests or forest remnants, or vegetated gullies for shelter and rest
• Prefer flat, high ground with grasses and open areas for feeding (Zusi 2010)
  • Use cleared land and disturbed habitats
  • Populations near urban areas show decline, probably due to hunting and to ecosystem disruption
• Elevations up to 2,000 m (6,562 ft) in New Zealand (Warburton 2005)
