Gharial (Gavialis gangeticus) Fact Sheet: Managed Care

Gharial (Gavialis gangeticus)

History of Managed Care

  • Breeding in managed care
    • Successful breeding in managed care, requires a simulation of native temperature and humidity fluctuations during a 24 hour cycle and throughout the year.
  • San Diego Zoo specimens
    • In 2012 San Diego Zoo Wildlife Alliance received 10 gharials born in managed care as a breeding loan from the Madras Crocodile Bank Trust in India.
    • These young individuals will hopefully contribute to the gene pool of gharials in North American zoos.
