Social issues in conservation & the environment

Aluka is an international, collaborative initiative building an online digital library of scholarly resources from and about Africa. ‘Aluka’, is derived from a Zulu word meaning ‘to weave’, reflecting our commitment to connect resources and scholars from around the world. In 2008, we announced that Aluka became part of JSTOR, a not-for-profit service that helps scholars, researchers, and students discover, use, and build upon a wide range of content in a trusted digital archive. JSTOR aims to place this content hosted by Aluka alongside current JSTOR collections.

EarthTrends is a comprehensive online database, maintained by the World Resources Institute, that focuses on the environmental, social, and economic trends that shape our world. Note: Earthtrends is no longer an active project.

You can find queries that provide information on environmentally related taxes, fees and charges, tradable permit systems, deposit refund systems, environmentally motivated subsidies and voluntary approaches used in environmental policy in OECD member countries, OECD accession countries, EEA member countries and countries otherwise co-operating with EEA, not being members of OECD. A number of other countries have also been invited to provide information for the database, and information on some environmentally related taxes in South Africa is available.

The Gateway to Development Information - Free resourceEldis selects and provides full-text documents and current information on international development policy, practice, and research from over 7,500 development organizations.

Environmental Treaties & Resource Indicators - Free resource ENTRI provides multilateral environmental treaty data for environmental treaties, treaty text, and other related information and provides the ability to construct custom tables by selecting countries and treaties of interest to the user.

The New Partnership for Africa's Development (NEPAD) is a programme of the African Union (AU) adopted in Lusaka, Zambia in 2001. NEPAD is a radically new intervention, spearheaded by African leaders to pursue new priorities and approaches to the political and socio-economic transformation of Africa.
