Association of Zoos & Aquariums (AZA) Conservation Initiatives
Promote species survival and ecosystem health. Field conservation programs, reintroduction programs, initiatives, research, sustainable practices, etc.
AZA Species Survival Programs (SSPs)
Oversee management of selected species (primarily endangered/threatened) in AZA-accredited facilities. Animal Programs Search and Animal Program Handbooks (membership required for some options)
World Association of Zoos and Aquariums (WAZA)
Conservation strategies & initiatives, breeding programs, research, education, sustainability, etc. Conservation and Sustainability Resource Centre (publications, links to online resources)
Center for International Environmental Law (CIEL)
Strengthens and uses international law to promote environmental protection, health, justice, and sustainability. Publications, education & training
CITES -- Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora
Regulation of global trade in endangered species and products. Appendices, species database, guidelines, publications
Conservation Breeding Specialist Group (CBSG)
Global network of conservation professionals who provide expertise to zoos, governments, & wildlife organizations. Workshops, reports, training, tools. Division of the IUCN Species Survival Commission
Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD)
United Nations convention, signed in 1993. Site provides overview & detailed information, decisions, recommendations
International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN)
The world’s oldest and largest global environmental organization. Publications, databases, conservation tools. Red List of Threatened Species -- up-to-date species information, maps. Summary Statistics -- conservation information categorized by taxonomic group and country. SSC Specialist Groups and Red List Authorities Directory -- species management information and contacts.
Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC)
U.S.-based environmental action group. Research reports, issue briefs, fact sheets, analyses, and publications (PDFs are free)
Wildlife trade monitoring network. Publications, proceedings, workshops, information on key species
UNEP World Conservation Monitoring Centre (UNEP-WCMC)
