Husbandry at the San Diego Zoo

San Diego Zoo Wildlife Alliance (SDZG)

  • Housed in a customized aviary at the San Diego Zoo Safari Park
  • Only breeding program for this species in North America
    • Began in 1993
  • Fed live crickets, mealworms, and bees
    • Beehives maintained in the exhibit, providing nutrition and enrichment
  • More than 100 chicks hatched, from 1993-2016
  • Each chick undergoes regular health checks
  • Rare in zoos
